ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said Saturday that the municipal government is making the required preparations for the solemn commemoration of Holy Week, which includes cleaning up the Abong-Abong Holy Hill in Barangay Pasonanca here.

“For the first time since the outbreak began in March 2020, it will be open to the public,” Salazar added.

Every Holy Week, an estimated 20,000 Catholic devotees flock to Abong-Abong Holy Hill to pray at the 14 Stations of the Cross at the foot of Mount Pulong Bato, according to police and barangay officials.

Salazar added that workers from the City General Services Office (CGSO) are presently scaling up preparations in Abong-Abong, such as painting the various Stations of the Cross, mending damaged roadways, and cleaning the area.

Salazar is meeting with officials from the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, the police, the military, and other relevant agencies, including Pasonanca barangay officials, to establish measures and rules for Holy Week.

The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) will deploy policemen in conjunction with the military’s Task Force Zamboanga at Abong-Abong to ensure the solemn celebration of Holy Week, according to Col. Alexander Lorenzo, ZCPO director.

Security troops will also be stationed in churches and other sites where religious events are planned, according to Lorenzo.

The pattern of security, parking, and traffic flow that will be applied this year, according to Efigenio Julian Jr., Pasonanca barangay chairperson, would be identical to that of prior years.

Backpacks, baseball caps, hooded jackets, and bladed weapons will be restricted at the Holy Hill, just as they were before the outbreak, Julian said. There will also be a prohibition on the sale of alcoholic beverages.
