The Philippine consulate in New York will distribute ballots as soon as possible: Cato
MANILA, Philippines โ Consul General Elmer Cato of the Philippine Consulate General in New York stated on Sunday that the ballots for abroad absentee voting would be mailed out as soon as possible.
Cato announced in a statement that the boxes containing the equipment and electoral memorabilia had just arrived at the FedEx facility in New Jersey, while other parcels had already left Alaska.
Other parcels will be delivered to the Consulate by Monday, unless there are any unforeseen circumstances, according to the ambassador.
“We won’t be able to send out the ballots until we receive them.” “As soon as we get them, we’ll send them out,” Cato stated.
Meanwhile, he defended the Consulate once more after certain members of the Filipino community said that the delay in mailing election materials and the “overall lack of timely information on the voting process” are causing voter disenfranchisement.
In an open letter published on Action Network, at least 64 Filipinos demanded the immediate distribution of electronic and printed voting materials, information on the voting process, and the establishment of a help desk to assist voters, a mechanism Cato claimed was already in place when the registration process began in 2020.
“We deplore the confrontational manner in which kababayan (countrymen) from groups like the Malaya Movement, Bayan-USA, and Migrante USA are addressing the issue of the delays, as well as their allegations that the Philippine Consulate General in New York and the Consul General are involved in an alleged conspiracy to disenfranchise voters,” Cato said.
“The erroneous attitudes of kababayan(s) connected with these groups do not reflect the emotions of the Filipino Community in the United States Northeast,” he continued. It also doesn’t represent the views of other kababayan(s) who support the same candidates as they do.”
The worried Filipinos should have contacted the Consulate directly, according to Cato, because it has a designated email address (newyorkpcg.ov@dfa.gov.ph) that actively answers to overseas voting-related concerns.
He went on to say that the Consulate had held multiple virtual town hall meetings about abroad voting in recent months, as well as posting advisories on its website and social media platforms.
“In our online and in-person encounters with the Filipino community, we’ve been answering election-related queries. We’ll have another town hall meeting with the Commission on Elections on Monday at 7 p.m. to explain the postal voting process to our kababayan(s) and answer their election-related questions,” he said.
“The purpose of this webinar is to verify that all votes cast are counted as genuine and that none are ruled invalid due to balloting issues.” Because we continue to perform activities that encourage maximum involvement and the importance of all votes, this is the polar opposite of disenfranchisement,” Cato noted.
