Robin Padilla, according to Duterte, is “more than just an actor.”

MANILA, Philippines โ€” President Rodrigo R. Duterte thinks Senatorial hopeful and Muslim convert Robin Padilla is “more than just an actor,” citing his many contributions to the Muslim community.

Duterte expressed respect for Padilla’s advocacies during the second episode of President’s Chatroom, which aired on state-run PTV-4 on Sunday night. These include creating new legislation to help the growth of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

“Ang hangarin mo sa Pilipinas buhay maganda.” Tinulungan mo ‘yung ating mga Muslim brothers and sisters, and ikaw naman you were a proponent of matulungan sila (Your life’s desire is what is good for the Philippines.) You assisted our Muslim brothers and sisters and advocated for their assistance),” Duterte reminded Padilla.

In the midst of continuous attempts to achieve peace and preserve national security, he commended Padilla for reaching out to his fellow Muslims.

“Ikaw ‘yung isa sa mga tao na offered the moderation to keep things under control.” Putukan ng giyera talagang patayan hindi magkaroon ng giyera talagang patayan hindi magkaroon ng giyera talagang patayan hindi magkaroon ng giyera talagang patayan hindi magkaroon ng giyera To avoid a conflict with massacres and shooting),” he added.

Padilla, who had played Andres Bonifacio in a film, was dubbed a “crusader” by Duterte because he was a “moral and decent guy.”

“To those listening, you Filipinos, it’s more than just being an actor โ€” huwag na, itabi natin ‘yan โ€” kung may pelikula ka man, extra ano na naman ‘yan,” he remarked.

If Padilla is not given the opportunity to run for public office, Duterte believes it will be a “waste.”

He also downplayed Padilla’s 1994 conviction for illegal gun possession, saying that he was pardoned by Fidel V. Ramos and released from prison in 1997.

Padilla’s civil and political rights were not fully restored by Ramos’ conditional pardon.

“I regret to inform you that the offense is not one of moral turpitude. So it has nothing to do with morality (walang kaalaman ‘yan sa). He said, “Eh hawak lang ng baril eh (It’s simply holding a pistol).”

Padilla was granted an absolute pardon by Duterte in November 2016, allowing him to vote and travel abroad, among other things.

If Padilla is elected senator, Duterte has encouraged him to “address” the abuse of the country’s party-list system, which he claims is used by the wealthy to influence Congress on their behalf.

“Ang talaga ‘yung mahirap ginagamit naman sa pangalan, urban poor pero ang puro bilyonaryo ang representative nila.” (They are merely impoverished in name, but their representatives are billionaires.) So, ako (me), I recommend that you correct that,” he said Padilla.

Padilla, for one, applauded Duterte for instilling pride in Filipinos, particularly the Bangsamoro.

He claimed that only Duterte, Mindanao’s first president, addressed the need to correct historical injustices in the region.

“Ang mga Bangsamoro po talaga binigyan niyo ng pride.” Tumaas ang kanilang pagtingin sa sarili nila (You brought pride to the Bangsamoro people.) They now have a better sense of self-worth),” Padilla explained.

He promised to carry on Duterte’s legacy, which includes eliminating criminals and eradicating the country’s drug problem.

“Iyon po talaga nakita ko talaga na kapag ang isang bayan ay may law and order, puwede po tayong umunlad,” he continued.

Padilla stated that he wanted to see the “Build, Build, Build” infrastructure program strengthened.

He also sought to build a federal-style government, which the Duterte administration had to put on hold in order to focus on the current Covid-19 outbreak.

“Kung aaraw-arawin ko po ‘yan na patungkol sa federalism ang akin pong sasabihin, naniwala po ako na maiintindihan po ng mga Pilipino na lumang-luma na itong unitary form of presidential governance,” Padilla added.

Padilla is best known as a film actor for his “bad boy” persona.

The senatorial contender has joined the UniTeam coalition, which includes presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and vice-presidential candidate Sara Duterte.
