The Department of Energy and the World Bank will release an offshore wind roadmap.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Department of Energy (DOE) and the World Bank Group (WBG) will jointly announce the country’s first Offshore Wind Roadmap, with the goal of increasing wind power’s proportion of the country’s energy mix.

Under the combined Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP)-International Finance Corporation Offshore Wind Development Program, the WBG commissioned the Philippine Offshore Wind Roadmap.

On April 20, the blueprint will be unveiled.

“The WBG has been working closely with the DOE to develop this first-of-its-kind strategy, which intends to take advantage of the country’s 178-gigawatt offshore wind potential.” The launch will provide another chance to help the Philippines’ objective of transitioning away from coal and toward a more sustainable energy system, according to a statement released by the DOE on Tuesday.

Offshore wind farms are constructed over bodies of water such as seas and oceans, which have higher wind speeds and hence can generate more power.

The DOE stated that it is eager to work with stakeholders from the public and private sectors, both domestically and internationally, to discuss prospective collaboration and partnerships to boost the country’s wind energy.

With the unveiling of the roadmap, proposals on policy and regulatory frameworks, long-term vision for the industry, spatial planning, grid development and integration, and finance and commercial concerns will be explored, according to the company.

According to market research and advisory firm, Mordor Intelligence, the Philippine wind energy market is predicted to increase by 7.5 percent on average between 2019 and 2027.

Wind energy projects will also assist the country meet its targets under the National Renewable Energy Program, which intends to boost renewable energy’s participation in the power generating mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
