MANILA, Philippines — Bahrain is donating 240,000 vaccination shots to the Philippines, according to Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.

On April 13, he made the promise during a phone discussion with Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani.

Pfizer dosages for the pediatric group would account for around 40,000 of the overall gift, according to the DFA.

During the same call, the two officials discussed the possibility of establishing a Bahraini Embassy in the Philippines, owing to strengthening bilateral ties, which are partly fueled by the important contributions of the Filipino community to Bahraini society.

“During the call, the two Ministers discussed the friendly relations between the two friendly countries, as well as ways to promote and further develop the distinguished bilateral relations between the two countries in order to achieve mutual benefits, as well as a number of regional and international issues of common interest,” according to a statement from Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Philippines and Bahrain have always had friendly relations.

In the areas of air services, workforce recruitment, investments, taxation, tourism, education, health care, development assistance, agriculture, and industry, 15 agreements and memorandums of understanding (MOUs) have been struck between the two countries.

In the labor market, the Bahraini government has continued to enable Filipino workers to work in the Kingdom and has introduced programs and labor reforms that benefit the Filipino community, including the “flexi visa system,” which allows migrants to work as freelancers.

According to government estimates, there will be around 50,000 Filipinos in Bahrain by 2020.
