On Tuesday, Malacanang wished former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada a happy 85th birthday.

On behalf of the Palace, Acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar wished Estrada happiness and good health.

“Binabati po natin si Pangulong (We greet President) Joseph Ejercito Estrada sa kanyang ika-85 kaarawan ngayong araw (on his 85th birthday today), April 19,” the statement said. Mr. President, Mayor Erap, I wish you a happy birthday. Mr. President, we wish you happiness and good health,” he said at a press conference at the White House.

Emilio Ejercito and Maria Marcelo Estrada were born on April 19, 1937, in Tondo, Manila.

In his early twenties, he became a movie actor and established himself as a living legend in the local film industry.

Estrada first entered politics in 1967, when he was elected mayor of San Juan, where he remained until 1986.

He served as a Senator from 1987 to 1992, and as a politician, he was named Chairperson of the Cultural, Rural Development, and Public Works committees.

Under President Fidel V. Ramos, he was elected Vice President of the Philippines in 1992 and served until 1998.

He was elected President of the United States in May 1998, but his term was brief.

On January 20, 2001, Estrada was deposed amid widespread protests, and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, his vice president, was elected president.

He was found guilty of plunder in September 2007. However, Arroyo later gave him a presidential pardon.

In 2010, he sought president again but lost to Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Estrada campaigned for mayor of Manila in 2013 and defeated Alfredo Lim, the incumbent.

Estrada spent his 84th birthday in a hospital last year after contracting pneumonia caused by Covid-19.
