Macron wins the second round of the French presidential election, according to exit polls.

PARIS (Reuters) โ€“ According to a preliminary exit poll broadcast Sunday evening by French television BFMTV, incumbent President Emmanuel Macron won the 2022 French presidential runoff with 57.6 percent of the vote.

According to figures posted on the Interior Ministry’s website on Monday, Macron received 58.55 percent of the vote in the presidential election runoff after the main count of votes was completed.

Marine Le Pen of the National Rally party received 41.45% of the vote.

Le Pen had earlier called her opponent to congratulate him on his expected triumph.

Le Pen described her performance as a historic success for the party while speaking at a rally of her supporters, vowing to continue fighting during the parliamentary elections set for the summer.

The final results of the runoff will be announced by the French Constitutional Council in the middle of the week.

The Interior Ministry recorded a 71.99 percent turnout, one of the lowest in French runoff elections. Only in 1969 did voter turnout go below 70%, with 68.9% of eligible voters casting ballots.

In the most recent election, 8.6% of the ballots counted were either blank or mismarked.

The victory of democracy

According to Anadolu, some European leaders hailed Macron’s re-election as a democratic achievement.

“Today, you have chosen a humanist vision, ambitious for our country’s independence, for Europe, ambitious in its principles, social and ecological, a project founded on labor and creation,” Macron said in his victory address.

“I intend to push this idea hard for the next few years, taking into account the opposition that has been raised and respecting differences.”

“I look forward to maintaining our good cooperation,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Twitter, congratulating Macron on his re-election. We will drive France and Europe ahead together.”

Macron’s re-election reassured her colleague, Charles Michel, president of the European Council.

“We need a strong Europe and a France that is fully committed to a more sovereign and strategic European Union in this difficult time.” For the next five years, we can rely on France “he stated

“Strong leadership is important in these uncertain times,” said Christine Lagarde, head of the European Central Bank, “and your (Macron’s) relentless dedication will be sorely required to solve the issues we face in Europe.”

The leaders of Spain, Germany, and Portugal, who had joined forces to urge the French people to prevent far-right Le Pen’s triumph, were ecstatic with the outcome.

“The people of France have chosen a France dedicated to a free, robust, and fair European Union.” Democracy triumphs. “Europe triumphs,” stated Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s prime minister.

“Your voters have given a significant vote of confidence in Europe today,” German chancellor Olaf Sholz stated. I am pleased that we will continue to work well together.”

‘Excellent news for Europe.’

“The French people have once again proved their loyalty to the European idea,” Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa remarked on the results.

“It is critical to count on France to defend multilateralism, security, the fight against climate change, and to engage in the development of a humanist, more equal, green, and prosperous Europe in these trying times for our continent and the world,” he added.

Macron’s triumph was greeted by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi as “splendid news for all of Europe.”

“Italy and France, along with all other partners, are working together to construct a Europe that is stronger, more cohesive, and fairer, capable of leading the way in confronting the major challenges of our time, beginning with the war in Ukraine,” Draghi added.

“We are ready to work together immediately, with ambition and drive, at the service of our country and all European residents,” he said.

Similar feelings were expressed by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who called it “a great triumph for France, Europe, and democracy.”

“The French have taken an important choice today,” Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo stated. They went with certainty and enlightenment values.”

“France is one of our closest and most essential allies,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, with whom Macron has had multiple political squabbles and differences over Brexit, welcomed Macron and said: “France is one of our closest and most important allies.” I am looking forward to continuing to collaborate on the issues that are most important to our two countries and the rest of the world.
