A new EU proposal to assist Ukraine in the investigation of war crimes has been made.
BRUSSELS – On Monday, the European Commission requested that the Eurojust agency’s scope be extended in order to assist Ukrainian authorities in their investigation of war crimes.
“The proposed strengthening will provide the agency with the legal ability to collect, preserve, and share evidence on war crimes with relevant national and international authorities, including the International Criminal Court,” said Christian Wigand, the EU executive body’s justice affairs spokesperson.
Eurojust, which is in charge of judicial cooperation between EU member states on criminal matters, has investigated foreign crimes before, but “the existing laws did not anticipate a situation of this scope and crimes of this kind,” he added.
He also stated that the EU’s assistance is required because the ongoing fighting in Ukraine makes it difficult for Ukrainian authorities to store and preserve critical evidence.
The new mandate, if passed, will empower Eurojust to collect, evaluate, and retain evidence, as well as process pertinent data like films, audio recordings, and satellite photos.
Eurojust would also be able to assist the International Criminal Court and other international entities as a result of the legal reforms.
The plan has yet to be approved by the European Parliament and EU member states.
According to UN estimates, at least 2,665 people have been killed and 3,053 injured in Ukraine since the start of the war, with the true figure expected to be far higher.
According to the UN refugee agency, more than 5.2 million Ukrainians have fled to neighboring countries, with over 7.7 million more internally displaced.
