GENERAL SANTOS CITY – During the election season, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) advised all government employees, including barangay officials, to desist from engaging in partisan political activity.

All heads, officials, and workers of all state departments and offices are commanded to “uphold the concept of political neutrality in government at all times,” according to Rilimin Sandoval, GenSan DILG chairman.

Officials and workers of government-owned or controlled enterprises, government financial institutions, state universities and colleges, and uniformed services are also covered by the directive, which was signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Nov. 8, 2021.

“In the government service, public officials and employees must keep political neutrality and maintain professionalism in the fulfillment of their duties,” Sandoval stated.

According to Batas Pambansa 881 of the Omnibus Election Code, partisan political action is defined as an act “intended to promote the election or defeat of a particular candidate or candidates to a public office.”

She stated that the prohibition on electioneering and partisan political activity will apply regardless of whether a candidate or party is supported and that it will apply to all government employees’ actions, whether in traditional or new media.
