Pangasinan’s INFANTA. A family’s patotoy (local delicacy) producing business was named the country’s third-best Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-assisted livelihood project.

The sweet native delicacy is prepared with sticky rice as the outer coating and yema or ube as the filling.

Perfect Caballero Jr., the family’s patriarch, said the family began selling patotoy to their neighbors in 2017 and it quickly gained popularity in the community.

“It was merely a snack provided by Jenyfer Barretto, my sister-in-law, on one of her trips to our house. Sheryl, my wife, and her other two sisters were also taught how to make the snack by her. He explained that they used to create yema.

Caballero claims that their neighbors, who became frequent patotoy customers, spread the news about the product to others.

Caballero’s family, along with other micro, small, and medium firms, got PHP20,000 in equipment and materials from DOLE for their native delicacy-making business through the Integrated Livelihood Program in 2020.

He claims that they now sell their items in adjacent Pangasinan and Zambales towns and cities.

Caballero used to be a fisherman, but now he and his wife and children make patotoys for a living.

“I also get money by driving pedicabs, and now we have this business that is really beneficial to us,” he explained.

They sell patotoy in tubs ranging from PHP60 to PHP700 for a huge bilao size.

Caballero noted that they currently make around PHP30,000 per month, which is sufficient for their requirements and a small savings.

With the prize money from DOLE, the family hopes to renovate a piece of their home.

The Caballero family’s livelihood was one of 17 contingent projects in the individual category of the 2022 DOLE Kabuhayan Awards, which were hosted on May 27 at the New Coast Hotel in Malate, Manila.
