On Monday, villagers, largely local authorities and volunteers, staged a massive cleanup campaign with brooms and pruning knives to rid the province’s streets and rivers of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Several teams from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) were organized, according to Dr. Rogelio Balbag, executive director of the Provincial Health Council, not only for the cleanup drive but also to raise public awareness about the mosquito-borne disease through the “4S Kontra sa Dengue” campaign.

The 4S acronym stands for “search and destroy mosquito breeding sites,” “self-protection,” “early consultation,” and “say yes to fogging when an outbreak is imminent.”

Balbag stated that with the arrival of the rainy season, Ilocos residents were reminded to keep a watchful eye on their surroundings to prevent the spread of dengue fever.

As the province has been placed on high alert, the barangay, municipal, and provincial dengue brigades have already been activated.

Since January of this year, the province has documented a total of 77 dengue cases. The majority of these instances originated in Laoag and Batac.

“We encourage everyone to strive for the 4 p.m. environmental cleaning practice in all barangays,” added Balbag, who also mentioned that public hospitals have employed more workers to monitor dengue cases.
