BBM has accepted Thailand’s invitation to attend the APEC meeting in November.
MANILA, Philippines โ President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Thailand from November 18 to 19, according to his campaign.
In a press statement, Marcos’ camp said, “Incoming President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos accepted an invitation to attend the planned face-to-face Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Thailand this coming November 18-19, 2022.”
This came after the Thai government, which is chairing this year’s APEC, requested Marcos to attend the summit, which will take place in November.
When the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) ambassadors paid a courtesy call on Marcos on Monday, Thai Chargรฉ d’Affaires Thawat Sumitmor to the APEC Summit relayed Thailand’s offer.
Thailand’s Chargรฉ d’Affaires paid Marcos a visit at his campaign headquarters in Mandaluyong City, together with ambassadors from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Singapore, and Vietnam.
“Thawat Sumitmor, Thailand’s Chargรฉ d’ Affaires, personally invited Marcos attend the APEC Summit in his capacity as Thailand’s current APEC Chair,” the Marcos camp said.
Protests in Chile, the host country, forced the cancellation of the in-person APEC summit in 2019.
Because of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the APEC meetings in 2020 and 2021 were held virtually.
Thailand will host the APEC 2022 summit, which will emphasize the significance of resuming safe and easy cross-border travel to speed the region’s economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the APEC’s official website, this year’s gathering will focus on “restoring connection by resuming safe and seamless cross-border travel, reinvigorating tourism and the services sector, allowing corporate mobility, and expanding investment in health security.”
“Open. Connect. Balance” is the theme for APEC 2022.
Thailand, this year’s APEC chair, wants to help the Asia-Pacific region navigate a post-Covid-19 future by encouraging “long-term growth that is robust, inclusive, balanced, and sustainable.”
The major goal of the APEC Summit is to encourage Asia-Pacific economic growth, trade, and investment, as well as prosperity.
The role of ASEAN in the economic recovery
Meanwhile, Marcos praised Asean’s role in the region’s swift economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Marcos emphasized Asean’s value as a “very important regional organization” during a recent meeting with the regional bloc’s heads of missions, according to his camp.
“While he had previously met some of the ambassadors, he was pleased to meet them all together, observing how ASEAN has grown into a very important regional organization,” the Marcos campaign said. “He also believes ASEAN will play a key role in the region’s rapid economic recovery following the Covid-19 outbreak.”
