The Department of Health in Region 10 (DOH-10) announced Thursday that dengue cases in Northern Mindanao have surpassed the “epidemic” threshold, with a 134.25 percent increase this year compared to 2021 numbers.

DOH-10 medical technologist Gemma Uy said in a media forum that the number of cases increased to 3,844 from January 1 to June 11 this year, up from 1,641 in 2021.

According to data from the DOH-10’s Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Disaster Response Unit, Bukidnon had the highest number of dengue cases this year, with 1,322.

Cagayan de Oro City (757), Misamis Oriental (718), Lanao del Norte (502), Iligan City (294), Misamis Occidental (244), and Camiguin province were the next to finish (7).

“Our doctors already know how to address (suspected dengue cases) at the primary level before it becomes serious,” Uy added in vernacular, “since there were some [cases] where they allowed two to three days pass before submitting themselves to the hospital.”

DOH-10 also reported 14 deaths in the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, and Lanao del Norte over the same time period.

To prevent further deaths, Uy recommended parents take their children to the local health center as soon as possible, especially if they have symptoms like fever or rashes.

“When the stomach hurts, it’s a sign that there’s already bleeding.” As a result, we must not allow this to occur,” she stated.

Uy also emphasized the need for the 5S strategy in combating the rising number of dengue cases as the coronavirus disease-2019 continues to pose a danger.

Searching and removing mosquito breeding areas, self-protection measures, seeking early advice, supporting fogging for approaching outbreaks, and maintaining hydration is all part of the 5S method.
