Comelec restarts voter registration on July 4.

Voter registration efforts will pick back up on July 4 according to a statement made on Thursday by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The restart of voter registration, which only lasts until July 23, was allowed by the en banc, according to acting poll body spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco.

Voter registration is not permitted within 120 days of elections, according to Republic Act 8189 (Continuing Voter’s Registration Act), he said.

“On December 5, 2022, there will be Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE). It is already illegal as of roughly August 7,” the poll body official informed reporters.

Compared to the original request to keep it open until July 30, the allowed registration time is seven days shorter.

Laudiangco said that there are numerous post-registration obligations and activities that demand adequate time.

In order to post/publish the names of voter registration applicants, schedule the Election Registration Board (ERB) hearings, subject the registrants to database verification, hold the aforementioned ERB hearings, draft and approve the project of precincts, and cluster established precincts as may be necessary, we only have until July 24 through August 6. The petitions for inclusion or exclusion, on the other hand, will be submitted to, heard by, and resolved by MeTCs (Metropolitan Trial Courts) or MTCs (Municipal Trial Courts),” the judge said.

The polling organization has stated that around 66 million registered voters, including about 23 million young voters, are expected to participate in the village and youth elections.
