Exec: SC ruling demonstrates Comelec’s commitment to upholding the law.
The Supreme Court’s (SC) decision to dismiss the two cases of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s disqualification from office demonstrated the commitment of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to upholding the law, an official said on Wednesday.
The commitment of this Commission to the rule of law and its faithfulness to our Constitutional mandate, more so than its faithfulness in safeguarding the will of the people in all electoral processes, is demonstrated by the fact that, if this is indeed the Highest Court’s affirmation of the Comelec’s decision. Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” declared John Rex Laudiangco, acting spokesperson for the Comelec, in a statement.
However, Laudiangco claimed they haven’t yet received a copy of the high court’s decision.
The SC dismissed the disqualification cases G.R. Nos. 260374 (Fr. Christian B. Buenafe, et al. v. Commission on Elections, et al.) and 260426 on Tuesday, upholding the legitimacy of Marcos Jr.’s candidacy (Bonifacio P. Ilagan, et al. v. Commission on Elections, et al.).
The high court’s decision, according to former poll body chair Saidamen Pangarungan, has “finally put to rest” concerns about Marcos’ legitimacy and candidacy.
“In my opinion, the Supreme Court’s agreement with our legal justification adds to the Comelec’s illustrious record ahead of the 2022 National and Local Elections. I’m brought back to the en banc hearings where I explained my approach to the Comelec’s quasi-judicial duties: balancing a sense of urgency with the best possible legal interpretation. As a result, we can now firmly assert that there are no longer any obstacles standing in the way of President Marcos taking office as president of the Philippines on June 30,” he continued.
Pangarungan also offered his congratulations to Marcos, who will be sworn in as the nation’s 17th president on Thursday.
“I once again extend my heartfelt greetings to President-elect Marcos. A fair and reliable democratic election was made possible by the Comelec. The President will be responsible for carrying out actual governing. I convey my deepest wishes that the new president’s administration will improve a lot of all Filipinos,” he continued.
In March, outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Pangarungan as the head of the polling organization.
After Pangarungan’s appointment was rejected by the Commission on Appointments earlier this month, the Comelec’s head position is still open.
