After a fire destroys the Comelec office, polling data and servers are unharmed.

In the wake of a fire that destroyed its main headquarters in Manila’s Intramuros district on Sunday night, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) assured the public on Monday that both its servers and vaults are secure and unharmed.

“Ligtas po ang ating servers pati na rin ang ating election data, pati ang registration data. Maliit na bahagi lamang po ng IT (Information Technology) department ang naapektuhan. In fact, ‘yung reception area lang po ang naapektuhan (Our servers, election data and registration data are safe. Only a small portion of the IT department was affected — in fact, it was only the reception area),” Comelec acting spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said in a DZBB interview.

The results of the just finished May 9 elections can be seen online, according to Laudiangco.

Please take note that the election results and data are safe, secure, undamaged, and continue to be posted live on the Comelec official website (www.comelec.gov.ph) and the Election Results Website (www.2022electionresults.comelec.gov.ph). He said in a combination of English and Filipino, “Back-up of such is intact and safe as well, preserved as well at our locked vault.

He continued by saying that the fire barely slightly damaged the property.

“Isang lamesa, isang upuan, isang computer at isang printer lamang po ang na-damage at โ€˜yung kaunting nasa paligid lang ang na-damage. Pati po รฝung aming sprinkler system sa Palacio del Gobernador, na-activate lang sa maliit na bahagi kaya walang water damage sa ibang gamit (Only one table, one chair, one computer and one printer and some other materials in the surrounding area were damaged. Our sprinkler system at the Palacio del Gobernador was only activated in a small part of the office so there was no water damage caused to other equipment),” Laudiangco said.

He claimed that all other floors of the building, including the seventh story, and all other departments and offices were spared from fire damage.

“All ITD staff on duty have been safely evacuated,” said Laudiangco, “together with all duty guards, electricians, and other general services personnel of the Comelec, including Palacio del Gobernador Security and Maintenance Personnel.

The voter registration data is similarly safe, secure, undamaged, and kept in a separate protected vault, with a secure off-site location set aside for backup. Other digital and physical files, whether administrative, operational, or judicial, are all safe, secure, intact, and untouched due to the fire’s limited direct damage, the official said.

At the Palacio del Gobernador, all Comelec offices and departments will observe a work-from-home policy on Monday.

While the Bureau of Incident Protection (BFP) looks into the origin of the fire, offices, and departments will continue to operate with minimal staff in order to do inventory, assessments, and other administrative and operational tasks.

In order to ascertain the cause of the incident and further secure the safety of all Comelec offices, Laudiangco stated, “We shall be completely cooperating with the BFP and the Palacio del Gobernador Building Administration.”

No impact on the village and the young polls

Laudiangco stated during a news conference that the fire on Sunday night would not have an impact on their planning for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

No election-related documents, from previous or upcoming elections, were harmed, he claimed.

He stated that the Bureau of Incident Protection (BFP) is conducting an investigation to ascertain the origin of the fire and the extent of the damage.

Laudiangco continued, saying that the probe has turned up no evidence of wrongdoing thus far.

The date for the BSKE is December 5.
