UAE ratifies the Asean Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean55th )’s Foreign Ministers Meeting, which took place in the Kingdom of Cambodia from July 30 to August 6, 2022, was attended by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The UAE signed the Asean Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia as one of the major issues on the meeting’s agenda (TAC).
Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali, Assistant Minister for Economic and Trade Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, represented the UAE at the signing ceremony (MoFAIC).
Alshaali emphasized in his speech the strong ties and similar values between the UAE and Asean member nations.
“The TAC’s signature demonstrates the UAE’s desire to develop and enhance its commercial ties with Asean nations, he continued.
He emphasized international issues that show how crucial multilateral collaboration is, particularly within regional and global institutions like Asean.
He added that the TAC’s signature signifies the last step in the UAE’s bid to become an Asean Sectoral Dialogue Partner (SDP).
“It is crucial to emphasize the benefits that this partnership will bring to both parties as the UAE completes the last step in the process of obtaining SDP status. In particular, it will give our joint efforts to address pressing issues at the regional and global levels, such as climate change, food and energy security, and the sustainability of the healthcare sector, more momentum, Alshaali said.
Specifically in the areas of commerce, investment, tourism, digital transformation, and healthcare, he emphasized the concrete benefits of the UAE’s potential relationship with Asean and its member states.
The UAE’s efforts to ratify the TAC and become an SDP member of Asean are a part of the MoFAIC’s overarching strategy and the UAE’s Principles of the 50 framework, which place a focus on creating long-lasting and fruitful alliances with other nations and multilateral organizations.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a ten-member economic association that was founded by Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, established the TAC as a peace treaty among Southeast Asian nations.
