The DavOr government will promote massive corn production.

The provincial government of Davao Oriental will promote massive corn production and encourage farmers to become entrepreneurs.

In an interview conducted on Wednesday, provincial information officer Karen Lou Deloso stated that the government’s main objective in pushing for the project is to reduce the incidence of poverty in the province through agricultural efforts.

Deloso stated that Governor Corazon Malanyaon accepted a proposal from Vicente T. Lao, president and chief executive officer of the world-class Filipino poultry company Maharlika Agro-Marine Ventures Corporation.

Given that the market prices of all other commodities depend on the production cost of corn, Lao asserted that corn is a crucial commodity with “vast potential” to address the nation’s food security concerns.

Yellow corn is an essential component of feed for swine, poultry, and fish. Due to its high carotene content, it is preferred as an animal feed.

On the basis of the proposal, the company will lease flat, contiguous farmlands that will be identified by the provincial government. The company will supply the farming equipment, seedlings, and other inputs.

“It will also construct a feed mill to convert the corn into feeds,” said Deloso, adding that participating farmers will engage in chicken production through a contract growing program.

Deloso added, “The company will provide the chicks and feed and may even invest in the coop or enclosure to house them.”

She stated that farmers are only required to cover the labor costs associated with raising and reproducing chickens and constructing the housing for poultry livestock.

“In exchange, the company, which manufactures a variety of poultry products, guarantees to purchase the chicken from the farmers,” said Deloso.

Malanyaon stated that she viewed the proposal as an opportunity for her administration to reduce the incidence of poverty in the province.

The incidence of poverty in Davao Oriental will be 32.7% in 2021, the second highest rate among the five provinces of the Davao Region.

Malanyaon stated that the Provincial Agriculture Office had been instructed to examine the feasibility of the proposal.

“If there are 150,000 families below the poverty threshold, we could aim to improve the financial conditions of at least 50 percent of these families,” the governor said.

She added that the province would select and produce major crops and livestock based on market forces.
