The municipal government has approved the use of Igorot Park, which is located within the Burnham Park reservation, as a selling place for local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) during the holiday season.

Handcrafted materials, women’s fabric and clothes, processed food, and other goods created and processed by MSMEs who were badly hit by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic are among the items on exhibit for sale until December 24.

In a phone interview on Monday, Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan said the city council adopted a resolution allowing the presentation of indigenous or locally created products as well as the promotion of entrepreneurial skills as part of the local government’s economic recovery plan.

Local enterprises and various organizations involved in livelihood projects and programs are encouraged to participate actively in the city’s economic recovery drive.

Small businesses, according to Olowan, are among those most affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

“Social resiliency necessitates people’s empowerment by allowing them to exercise their entrepreneurial skills while promoting their level of creativity and fostering unique culture through indigenous, culturally-inspired, and locally-made products and artistic brands,” he said, reading a portion of the resolution.

The local government had previously approved the transfer of funding to MSMEs as a soft loan to aid the sector’s recovery from the pandemic’s losses.

Aside from local government programs, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Department of Science and Technology, and other government agencies are all working to boost the sector’s performance.
