Lockdowns are not necessary to stop the spread of monkey pox
Monkeypox cannot be stopped from spreading across the nation without the introduction of a lockdown, a specialist in infectious diseases stated on Monday.
Dr. Rontgene Solante stated during a live broadcast of the Laging Handa public briefing that monkeypox is not as contagious as Covid-19 and that lockdown is not the best response.
“Lockdown as a response to monkeypox infection is overreacting. The present examples are not sufficient to establish that we require a lockdown, he added. “The current cases are not sufficient to establish that we require a lockdown,” he said.
Four cases of monkeypox have been reported in the nation thus far.
The necessity of raising public knowledge of the illness and its symptoms, particularly in areas where instances have been found, was stressed by Solante.
He said that greater knowledge might facilitate easier detection because patients would visit doctors when they experienced symptoms.
They will also be isolated to stop the transmission from person to person, he added, making their diagnosis “at importante kung ma-diagnose sila.”
According to Maria Rosario Vergeire, the Department of Health’s official in charge, there are still not enough facts in place to conclusively prove that monkeypox is being spread locally in the nation.
This came after the fourth case—a 25-year-old Filipino—disclosed no recorded travel history to nations with monkeypox cases that had been confirmed.
“Local transmission may be possible, but we won’t become alarmed. Let’s improve the protocols in the hospitals that are caring for these patients, Solante said. “Mas lalo natin paigtingin ang mga protocols sa mga hospitals,” he said.
He added that because the monkeypox virus has a 21-day incubation period, contact tracing must be performed in order to quickly identify potential cases before they manifest symptoms.
