A Senate bill on barangay food security gains support.

Several government organizations have backed a bill to fund barangay-level food security initiatives.

This comes after Senate Bill 395, also known as the Barangay Food Security Bill, introduced by Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, received the support of the Departments of Agriculture (DA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Education (DepEd), and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

“We support the proposed bill wholeheartedly. We are supporting this bill because it is one of the many necessary pieces of legislation that should be promoted, said Bien Saint Garcia of the DA’s Legislative Liaison Office on Thursday during the Senate Local Government Committee hearing.

Garcia claimed that Ejercito’s bill would support the DA’s efforts to encourage urban farming.

When the proposal is passed into law, the DepEd’s “Gulayan sa Paaralan Program” can be incorporated into its execution, according to the officer-in-charge of the division’s youth formation, Rovin James Canja.

According to Ejercito, turning unused land in public schools over for farming would encourage students to value agriculture.

“Our children must be exposed to farming and planting in this contemporary era as a part of their fundamental education. Because of our current state of panahon, there is nun. Currently, Farmville and computers are all that are being talked about among the bats. Since children are more accustomed to computers today—particularly Farmville—they have more experience with farming than they did in the past, according to Ejercito.

Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, the Philippine Councilors’ League, and the Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines all supported Ejercito’s proposed law.

Additionally, the measure requires local governments to identify vacant private properties, public parks, public school grounds, and vacant private lands that could be used for vegetable farming.

The bill suggests building hydroponic and vertical gardening infrastructure in areas where such lands are unavailable.

The seeds and resources needed to carry out the program must be supplied by the DA.
