To help clear the appellate court’s docket backlog, Senator Christopher Go recommends establishing new divisions within the Court of Appeals (CA) and the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC).

The Judiciary Reorganization Act, or Batas Pambansa Bilang 129, is intended to be modified by Go’s Senate Bill Nos. 1186 and 1187.

The bills require the CA to conduct ongoing trials and hearings that “shall be finished within three months unless the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court extends the period.”

The CA sought an additional PHP500 million to its allocated PHP2.10 billion allocation for 2023 during the budget hearing for the judiciary held by the Committee on Finance on Monday.

The funds will be used, among other things, to rebuild the CA office in Cagayan De Oro City that was destroyed by an earthquake three years ago, according to Acting Presiding Justice Remedios Salazar-Fernando.

On October 29, 2019, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake near Cotabato was felt in Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental.

In less than a year, the CA, according to her report, has resolved 3,003 instances.

“We only have one case, and that dates back three years. Therefore, there are no longer any five or ten years, “Fernando threw in.

In accordance with its mandate, the CA has a year to decide on a case for consideration.
