Hungary is luring Filipinos to study nuclear engineering to assist in future energy solutions for the Philippines.

Officials urged any Filipinos who might be interested in applying for a scholarship when it opens up again at the 7th round of political discussions between the Philippines and Hungary, which took place this week in Budapest.

A Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) readout dated September 30, “The Philippines thanked Hungary for continuing to provide educational opportunities for Filipino scholars to study in Hungarian universities via the Stipendium Hungaricum program, which annually allocates 35 slots for qualified Filipinos.” Hungary urged Filipinos to enroll in the scholarship program for nuclear engineering as it looked into potential energy solutions for the Philippines in the future.

The last time applications were accepted was November 2021 for the academic year 2022–2023.

Along with schooling, the potential for a bilateral labor agreement was also explored in response to the rapidly increasing number of Filipinos stationed in Hungary.

The two nations also discussed ways to better utilize current agreements on agriculture, research, and technology while reviewing the status of pending agreements on financial cooperation and transportation.

According to the DFA, the conference offered a chance to discuss regional challenges, including the security circumstances in Southeast Asia, the South China Sea, and Europe.

The meeting was led on September 26 by Hungary’s Deputy State Secretary for Development of Eastern Relations Adam Stifter and Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro.

Frank Cimafranca, the Philippine ambassador to Hungary, and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Department of Fastest Growing Economies accompanied them.
