Under “compassionate,” PAO envisions a larger role. Admin Marcos.
The Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) will be at the forefront of efforts by the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to build a compassionate society, according to Chief Public Attorney Persida Rueda-Acosta on Monday.
At the beginning of the national convention of PAO lawyers for their Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) on Monday at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City, Acosta said, “This year, we feel that all the efforts of our public attorneys and the entire agency of PAO are being appreciated by the new administration of H.E. (His Excellency) President BBM (Bongbong Marcos).
Two years after the coronavirus pandemic started, this is the first nationwide gathering of PAO attorneys.
Acosta praised the more than 2,000 public defenders for their efforts in commemorating the agency’s 50th anniversary this October.
Without them (PAO lawyers), it would be impossible to service 6,687,630 customers in 2020 and 9,707,274 clients in 2021, particularly during the height of the epidemic.
According to her, PAO lawyers successfully represented clients in 752,196 cases in 2020 and 787,174 cases in 2021.
The PBBM administration appears kind toward the PDLs (persons deprived of liberty). Therefore, I am optimistic that many of them will be released before 2022 ends and will be completely prepared for rehabilitation and reintegration, added Acosta.
The release of eligible PDLs is anticipated for October 25 by the Department of Justice.
Regarding the quantity of PDLs to be published, Acosta stated, “We hope that we may surpass the 371 PDLs that we were able to distribute last September 13, 2022.”
According to the supplemental agreement between the PAO and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), signed on September 19, the PAO has also promised to represent more qualified petitioners.
By Republic Act 9262, the extra memorandum of agreement will target women and their children, particularly those whose financial support has fallen through “economic abuse” and who initially requested help from the DSWD.
