Whale shark killed by a propeller in Southern Leyte.

According to the municipal administration of San Ricardo town in Southern Leyte province, a propeller from a cargo ship cut in half a whale shark in Sogod Bay on Tuesday.

Lauro Elejerde, Jr., a municipal agriculturalist in San Ricardo, said on Tuesday that a whale shark’s floating lower limb was spotted on Monday about 3 p.m. by the crew of a sea vessel docked at the town’s Benit Port.

In a phone interview with the Philippine News Agency, Elejerde stated, “The whale shark’s body was fully separated, and it’s pretty evident that a propeller of a cargo vessel cut the marine mammal.”

Just a few meters from Benit port, which serves as Leyte Island’s entryway to Mindanao, the four-meter-long shark was discovered.

Every day, cargo ships travel from Southern Leyte to Surigao.

Elejerde claimed that because the top limb sank to the ocean below, it took two hours for divers from the Philippine Coast Guard to haul the body to shore.

Elejerde claims that Benit Port is situated at the entrance to Sogod Bay, a migratory area where whale sharks gorge themselves on zooplankton.

Divers have been drawn to Sogod Bay over the years by the presence of whale sharks.

Following the collection of tissue samples, the shark was buried by the Philippine Coast Guard.

Known as a whale shark, it is a large elasmobranch belonging to the Rhincodontidae family. Its external features include a broad, flattened head, a large, nearly terminal mouth, very large gill slits, three distinct longitudinal ridges on its upper flanks, a large first dorsal fin, a semi-lunate caudal fin, and a distinctive “checkerboard” pattern of light spots.
