On Monday, a congressman requested that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. pick the nine individuals who will serve on the Marawi Compensation Board (MCB), which will handle the claims of those who were injured in the 2017 Marawi siege.

The call was made by Lanao del Sur Representative Ziaur-Rahman Alonto Adiong as the nation commemorated the liberation of Marawi City’s fifth anniversary.

Adiong claimed that for Republic Act 11696, the Marawi Siege Compensation Act, to “realize the fullness,” the MCB members must be appointed because the law cannot be put into effect without the creation of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR), which the board will do.

The Marawi Compensation Board is required for the Implementing Rules and Regulations, or IRR, to be issued and approved. Accordingly, it is anticipated that residents of Marawi City and locals in Lanao del Sur will be the ones to do so.

He claimed that the MCB’s establishment would also initiate Marawi’s war-torn city’s reconstruction process.

According to him, the Marawi Compensation Act is just as much an expression of what is right and just within the current laws as it symbolizes optimism.

He said that the law is clearly on our side; the only thing left to do is to affirm the law in service of our communities and our people. “As we look towards the future, we hope that someday we can look back on this fateful day by finding comfort and relief in what we have rebuilt and regained together instead of feeling melancholy over what we have lost to a war that was violently brought into our homes.

According to the law, the MCB is in charge of making it possible for “qualifying claimants” who lost their homes or businesses during the Marawi siege to receive compensation tax-free.
