In order to fight maritime pollution, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has urged for increased cooperation between the US and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Stronger cooperation will provide governments with more capacities to enforce laws that prevent human-made items from entering the water, Marcos said in his speech at the 10th ASEAN-US Summit in Phnom Penh.

In his remarks, he urged continued cooperation in the battle against marine pollution and marine plastic trash as well as illicit, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

He applauded US initiatives that aid in the fight against international crime, terrorism, and human trafficking.

Marcos also declared that the Philippines would work with other nations to promote security and peace in the area.

With the idea that such multilateral structures should complement the ASEAN-centered regional security architecture, Marcos added, “We regard as of primary relevance Quad’s pledge of unshakable support for ASEAN unity and centrality.”

An ongoing strategic security dialogue between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States is known as the Quad, or the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD).

Through the International Law Enforcement Academy and the Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime + US (SOMTC + US), Marcos pushed for the continuation of engagement and capacity-building initiatives for law enforcement agencies and employees.

He also praised the joint statement establishing the ASEAN-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), saying that it “will serve as an additional anchor to our regional architecture and to the current international order, which is currently volatile and constantly in flux” and that it “will strengthen our relationship.”

To “reflect the ambitious outcomes of the 9th ASEAN-US Summit and the 2022 ASEAN-US Special Summit,” the ASEAN-US Leaders adopted a statement on Saturday announcing the formation of the ASEAN-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The future prosperity and security of its people depend on this alliance, which will also charge officials with monitoring its implementation.

The CSP between the US and the ASEAN community, according to US Vice President Joe Biden, would contribute to addressing “the toughest concerns of our day.”

According to him, the agreement aims to protect countries against “threats to the rule of law” and “create an Indo-Pacific that is free and open, stable and prosperous, resilient and secure.”

He said that the deal heralded a “new era” in US-ASEAN relations.
