Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, a former president and current representative for Pampanga’s 2nd District, thinks President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. made an “excellent impression” during his maiden attendance at the 29th APEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.

Malacaang said in a news release on Sunday that Macapagal-Arroyo was pleased with Marcos’ performance when he spoke in front of more than half of the world’s economies.

He undoubtedly left a positive effect on the heads of the major economies. Arroyo was quoted as saying, “And not just the most major economies, but also the finest economic thinkers of the world.”

Earlier, when he met with members of the Filipino community in Thailand at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Bangkok on Saturday, Marcos referred to Macapagal-Arroyo as his “secret weapon.”

He personally extended an invitation to Macapagal-Arroyo to join him at the APEC Summit, underlining the value of her knowledge and expertise.

“Dahil ako ‘yung baguhan dito huh, sinasabi kong secret weapon. Ako is the leader of the group. As a result of my relative inexperience, I say “secret weapon” when I say it when I attend meetings. The new boss is me. Because of this, whenever they saw GMA at the beginning of the meeting, they would exclaim, “Ah, my close friend! It would then be simple to start chatting to them, my good friend; Oh madali na kaagad ‘yung usapan,” he remarked.

Highly effective

Susan “Toots” Ople, secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), hailed Marcos’ inaugural APEC as “very successful.”

She said he struck up a nice connection with the other business leaders she met, including the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, and she called their conversations “quite easy, very encouraging.”

“You would see that both sides were excited to engage, especially when he spoke to the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia,” Ople said. “…Makikita mo na both sides excited mag-engage, and lalo na noong nakausap niya ‘yung Crown Prince, si His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman o MBS when tawagin siya sa Saudi Arabia

On the fringes of the APEC Summit, Marcos and the Crown Prince met privately.

The phrase “Makikita mo pag-upo pa lang nila parang magkaibigan na nagkatagpo, nagkuwentuhan, parehong forward-looking, parehong visionary, at parehong proud sa mga Pilipino” is used. They appeared to be old friends who had reconnected the instant they sat down, sharing memories and showing mutual pride in being Filipinos. Parang ‘yun din ‘yung kanilang naging common ground. They shared that as a foundation, Ople continued.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia agreed to cover the unpaid wages of over 10,000 Filipino workers who were displaced from its insolvent construction enterprises at the bilateral meeting between the two leaders.

According to Marcos, the Saudi Ministry of Labor has also guaranteed that Filipino workers in the Middle Eastern nation will no longer get unpaid salaries.

The two presidents also discussed the current oil situation as well as energy and petroleum.

Marcos attended APEC for the first time as president of his nation from November 16–19.

After what he called a “successful” APEC Summit and “substantive” bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other nations, he left for the Philippines on Sunday.
