VP Harris is in Manila to strengthen PH-US security ties.
A meeting with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte, as well as a tour to Palawan, were among the engagements for US Vice President Kamala Harris when she landed in Manila on Sunday night.
At the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Harris was greeted by Duterte’s spokesperson Reynold Munsaya, Pasay City Mayor Imelda Calixto-Rubiano, Pasay Rep. Antonino Calixto, US Ambassador to the Philippines Marykay Carlson, and Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez (NAIA).
A senior US government official has stated that the main goals of Harris’ talks with Marcos and Duterte will be to improve the economic and security ties between the US and the Philippines.
She will reiterate US defense commitments to the Philippines and the significance of their alliance for the South China Sea’s peace and stability.
The US official stated during a background press call that “they will address preserving international rules and norms” that was posted on the White House’s official website.
In order to improve the economic cooperation and investment links between the two nations, Harris will also promise to engage more closely with the Philippines.
The US source continued, “We think there will also be deliverables and new initiatives on this front, connected to the digital economy and upskilling and expediting the transition to renewable energy.”
Harris will meet with members of civil society on Monday to discuss how they can continue to promote the survival of democracy and human rights.
She will also take part in a town hall discussion with a group of young Filipino women.
Harris will also travel to Puerto Princesa, Palawan on Tuesday to show that the US administration is dedicated to supporting the Philippines in maintaining the South China Sea’s rules-based international maritime order.
The US official stated that the vice president would make remarks highlighting the value of international law, unhindered trade, and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.
Additionally, she will meet with locals, leaders of civil society, and members of the Philippine Coast Guard.
The US official continued, “And she will see firsthand the results of this collaboration and discuss how to strengthen it even further with additional funds and projects.” The Philippines Coast Guard has benefited from US assistance, training, and equipment.
The highest-ranking US official to ever visit Palawan will be Harris.
Marcos stated on Saturday that he thought Harris’ planned trip to Palawan would not escalate hostilities between the Philippines and China because it would just involve traveling through a small portion of Philippine territory.
“Harris is currently in the Philippines and is traveling to a different region of the country. Of fact, it is the area that is closest to the South China Sea, but it is also unmistakably on Philippine soil. Thus, I don’t believe there will be any issues “At the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Bangkok, he stated in a television interview.
