Under former AFP chief Ano, the Army sees a strengthened National Security Council
The National Security Council will be significantly strengthened by the appointment of former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Eduardo Ano as National Security Advisor (NSA), according to the Philippine Army (PA) (NSC).
Col. Xerxes Trinidad, a spokesman for the PA, said in a statement Sunday night that “his breadth and depth of leadership and administrative experience will surely bolster the NSC โ the government body that advises the President and Commander-in-Chief on matters related to the country’s national security.”
The PA, which is a crucial component of the Philippine defense and security apparatus, welcomed Ano’s selection as NSA, according to Trinidad.
“Veteran of the Marawi War Secretary Ano demonstrated his leadership skills while serving as the head of the Philippine Army and the AFP. He also served as the head of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), where he was instrumental in the national government’s reaction to the pandemic “says Trinidad.
The retired general, who was 61 years old, graduated from the Philippine Military Academy in 1983.
From 2018 to 2022, he was the DILG secretary under the Duterte administration.
He took over for Dr. Clarita Carlos, who left the position to “continue her pursuit of scholastic interests” at the House of Representatives Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department.
Defense Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. had expressed his confidence that Ano will offer knowledgeable advice to address numerous security issues.
On January 13 and 14, respectively, Galvez and Ano took the oath of office in front of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at Malacanang Palace.
