PBBM: PH is open to help with stepping up digitalization activities.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated on Tuesday that the Philippines welcomes any assistance that will support the government’s attempts to increase its use of technology (Zurich time).
In an open discussion at the WEF in Switzerland, Marcos made the statement while praising his administration’s efforts to digitize government operations and increase bureaucratic effectiveness.
He claimed that as an essential component of the bureaucracy’s digitalization, his administration has intensified efforts to set up a cybersecurity system.
We are currently working to create a cybersecurity system for this sensitive information because security has grown to be a major problem, added Marcos.
The President also mentioned how local governments had stepped up to assure the growth of digital infrastructure to enhance Internet access that could reach all Filipinos in the country.
“Therefore, local governments and some departments of the federal government would actually seize the initiative and launch their own communication platforms. Therefore, this needs to be combined and put together “said he. And that is where we are at the moment: creating the databases for the government and the databases that will be used by the national ID, which is currently being established.
Under the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s Broadband ng Masa and Free Wi-Fi for All programs, the Marcos administration has turned on thousands of previously unconnected locations.
However, given the Philippines’ poor Internet access, Marcos noted that the government still needed to do more to link millions of Filipinos and advance the digital economy.
“The Philippines still has a quite poor internet connectivity. Unfortunately, according to some of our surveys, the average consumer, if you want to call them that, communicates with every aspect of their lives online, with the exception of government “said he.
To address the council’s work plan for digital infrastructure, Marcos met with the Private Sector Advisory Council on Digital Infrastructure on January 12.
Additionally, “future plans in enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure” were discussed by Marcos and the PSAC members.
He requested an update on the implementation of Republic Act 11934, also known as the Subscriber Identity Module Registration Act, during the meeting and gave instructions to hasten the digitalization of the country’s identification system, which could be used for both public and private transactions.
