POGO employees affected by the closure are eligible for benefits: DOLE

Employees of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), both Filipino and international, who would be impacted by the shutdown of their businesses are entitled to benefits, a labor official said on Thursday.

“Whether you are a foreigner or a Filipino, the labor code applies to everyone who works in the Philippines. The international worker can take advantage of the programs that we have described. In a Laging Handa briefing, Labor Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez said, “Especially for the payment of separation pay, and unemployment insurance if they are qualified, they can get it because that is provided by law.

With Social Security System (SSS) unemployment insurance, the worker is eligible for a reward equal to half of the average maximum monthly credit that can be claimed within two months of separation. Separation pay is equal to one month’s income of the worker per year of service.

Benavidez also mentioned the DOLE’s employment facilitation program, which seeks to place the impacted workers in the same position.

“For a list of open positions, consult specific businesses or seek assistance from the Public Employment Service Office (PESO). They can upskill if more training is required. According to him, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is once again a division of the DOLE.

He stated that the organization also provides a program for a living.

We have a program that can provide startup funding to people who don’t want to look for work but instead want to start their own businesses. The price is P30,000. A modest sum to others, but significant assistance to people who would lose their jobs, he continued.

According to him, the impacted employee may also apply for an emergency job under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa ating Disadvantaged / Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program for a minimum of 10 days and a maximum of three months.

According to Benavidez, when POGOs stop operating throughout the nation, an estimated 25,000 employeesโ€”the majority of whom work as customer support representatives or dealers/agentsโ€”may be impacted.
