A state of calamity is declared in Carcar City due to ASF infection
A resolution declaring the entire municipality in a state of calamity due to the African swine fever (ASF) virus infection in three of its 15 barangays was passed by the Carcar City council on Monday.
Although not every barangay is impacted by the extremely contagious and deadly hemorrhagic disease of pigs, according to lawyer Eddie Barrita, the pronouncement applies to the entire community because the entire Carcar City was included in the provincial capital’s prohibition on surrounding towns and cities.
“With this proclamation of a state of emergency, we may access the disaster money. The local administration will provide financial support to the city, “Barrita spoke with the Philippine News Agency over the phone.
ASF won’t harm anyone. We, therefore, urge residents of Cebu and tourists to continue buying our chicharon and lechon. These are delicious as usual, Poblete said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency.
Three barangays in Carcar are designated as the “red zone,” according to Poblete, a member of the city’s ASF Task Force, as they are the only areas where the virus has been detected.
Almost 400 hogs are reportedly being killed in Barangays Can-asujan, Guadalupe, and Poblacion 1 as part of continuing culling.
He said that there are more than 1,000 backyard farmers in the city, almost half of whom had livestock farmer groups on file. There are no pig farms of a commercial scale in the area.
“Those who have a PCIC (Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation) registration would receive help. But, Mayor Mario Patricio Barcenas had the idea to aid the hog farmers long before that. These are constituents after all, according to Poblete.
Beginning on March 16, Barangay Mantalongon’s largest livestock auction (tabo) market in the province saw the temporary suspension of swine trading.
Every Thursday, traders and farmers from other towns in Cebu as well as from other provinces like Negros and Leyte participate in the auction and trading of thousands of pigs, chickens, goats, cattle, and other agricultural products at the Mantalongon livestock facility, which is the largest livestock market in the province of Cebu.
