Expert advice: Treat HIV as a communicable illness.
According to the infectious disease specialist Dr. Edsel Salvana, treating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection like a communicable disease that may be prevented and treated is necessary.
In a televised public briefing on Thursday, Salvana emphasized that false beliefs about how it is transmitted are one of the factors contributing to the rise in cases in the nation and that stigma and discrimination against people with HIV or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) still exist globally.
HIV is a sexually transmitted sickness that may affect anyone; it doesn’t just affect people who have sex with men, he added, adding that men who have sex with men can also contract the disease.
Everybody can contract HIV, including babies if their mothers weren’t given medicine, according to the saying “Hindi nabigyan ng gamot iyong nanay.”
In January of this year, 1,454 more people were proven to have contracted HIV, and 86 of them were teenagers or children, according to a recent Department of Health study.
Seven of the 86 cases involved children under the age of nine, bringing the total number of cases to 79.
The majority of cases were contracted through sexual activity.
A total of 110,736 HIV cases and 6,383 reported fatalities have been recorded since 1984.
Salvana stated that it is crucial to educate ourselves on this issue in order to prevent it. “Let’s remove the stigma because there is none, it is not God’s punishment,” Salvana added.
The basic line is that HIV must be viewed as a biological sickness with a treatment and a means of prevention. And if it does, as long as the virus is repressed, no one will be harmed. (And when treated, it could not infect other people as long as the virus is suppressed).
Earlier, Maria Rosario Vergeire, the DOH officer in charge, said that the government offers free HIV testing and care.
She claimed that drugs like antivirals might let patients with HIV live long, fulfilling lives.
