Marathon highlights the potential of Panay’s highest mountain

The first Mountain Marathon athletic competition has boosted Culasi town’s tourism potential, especially for Mt. Madja-as, the highest peak on Panay island.

With an elevation of 2,113 meters above sea level, Mt. Madja-as is the second-highest mountain in the Visayas and was scaled by 389 sports enthusiasts during the marathon event on March 25–26.

In an interview on Monday, Lomugdang stated, “Through the mountain marathon, we were able to highlight that Culasi has numerous underutilized tourism destinations and natural resources that we should be proud of.

The three categories for the mountain marathon are the 15-kilometer, 25-kilometer, and 42-kilometer races.

According to Lomugdang, while the participants traveled the trail, they observed the preserved and protected greenery.

One could already make out the islands of Mararison and Batbatan of Culasi, which are known for their fine white sand, from the base of Mt. Madja-as.

As part of his promotion for sports tourism, Antique Representative Antonio Agapito Legarda stated in his speech at the launch on March 25 that he plans to conduct the event every year.

He also intended to get the Philippine Sports Commission to acknowledge and support the mountain marathon.

The sole district delegate said that Iraynon-Bukidnon Larry Apolinario, who triumphed in the inaugural Philippine Trail Running Association (PHILTRA) National Championship on February 26 in Bontoc, Mountain Province, was the motivation behind the marathon.

John Ray “Stingray” Onifa, a local ultramarathoner, was also present at the event and lit the urn to signal the competition’s start.

Rogen Aguirre won the 15-kilometer category and received PHP6,000 in prize money; Randolf Gonzales won the 25-kilometer category and received PHP8,000; and Onifa won the 42-kilometer category and received PHP15,000 in prize money.

The Iraya Adventure Group, a group of mountaineers in Panay island, organized the event, and Senator Loren Legarda’s office provided prizes.
