The Department of Health (DOH) reported on Tuesday that in the first week of its campaign against vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), almost 2.3 million youngsters had received the measles and rubella vaccines.

The DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire stated in a media briefing that “This is equivalent to 22.4 percent of our” entire population who are eligible to receive the measles and rubella vaccine (MRV).

She also stated that 385,000 children (27.49 percent) had received their vitamin A supplement and 829,165 children (22.4 percent) had received the bivalent oral polio vaccination (OPV).

The intended number of kids who would receive vaccinations was not made public.

However, children between the ages of 9 months and 5 years are administered the MRV, while those between the ages of 0 months and 5 years are administered the OPV.

She also asked parents and local government agencies to work together to protect kids from VPDs, which, if ignored, might result in hospitalization or even death.

In order to vaccinate children against measles, rubella, and polio, particularly those who missed their routine immunization or were unable to get their vaccines at all due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the DOH officially launched the MRV-OPV supplemental immunization activity, or Chikiting Ligtas, on May 2.

According to the most recent UNICEF figures, the pandemic caused around 67 million children globally to miss out totally or partially on receiving their regular immunizations between 2019 and 2021.

It also revealed that the Philippines is the country with the second-highest percentage of youngsters who have received no doses globally and in East Asia and the Pacific.

In line with this, the DOH has noted 225 instances of children who had no vaccinations between January 1 and March 18, 2023. The amount represents an increase of 369 percent from the same time the previous year.
