🌍 PH, Thailand Tout ASEAN’s Role in Ensuring Regional Stability 🤝🌟

Both the Philippines and Thailand recognize the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a key player in promoting peace and stability within the region.

Department of National Defense (DND) spokesperson Arsenio Andolong stated on Monday, “On multilateral cooperation, the Philippines and Thailand recognized the importance of ASEAN as the stabilizing mechanism and central platform in promoting peace and stability in the region. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen cooperation with fellow ASEAN Member States, particularly under the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus.”

Andolong’s statement follows the successful conclusion of the 4th Philippines-Thailand Joint Committee on Military Cooperation (JCMC) held in Bangkok on June 27. The Filipino delegation, led by DND Assistant Secretary for Strategic Assessments and International Affairs Pablo Lorenzo, engaged in productive discussions with General Nuchit Sribunsong, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Defence of the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of Thailand.

During the meeting, the co-chairs reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the 1997 Philippines-Thailand Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Military Cooperation and stressed the importance of convening the JCMC annually. The officials exchanged insights on regional developments, challenges, and potential cooperation in enhancing cyber security and maritime security capabilities.

Furthermore, the bilateral defense cooperation between the two nations aims to deepen military relations through ongoing service-to-service dialogue mechanisms. They also expressed their mutual interest in collaborating on various aspects, including military medicine, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, the defense industry, cyber security, and maritime security.

Both countries warmly welcomed the proposed Philippines-Thailand Defense Engagement Plan for CY 2023-2024, as it will outline a comprehensive list of activities with short, medium, and long-term goals.

Assistant Secretary Lorenzo invited General Sribunsong and the Thai delegation to the Philippines for the 5th JCMC meeting in 2024, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Thailand. The officials eagerly anticipate further strengthening defense and military relations.

In other news, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Andres Centino visited Naval Operating Base Subic, Zambales, on July 1, where he emphasized the importance of improving naval capabilities to deter intruders from encroaching on the country’s waters. Gen. Centino acknowledged that the constant presence of a modernized Navy, equipped with guided missile frigates, anti-submarine helicopters, missile boats, and fast attack interdiction craft, has been instrumental in safeguarding the nation.

The AFP chief expressed his commitment to enhancing the Navy’s warfare capabilities and gradually shifting the focus from internal security to territorial defense operations. Gen. Centino praised the professionalism and dedication of naval personnel despite the challenges faced by the AFP.

During his visit to Naval Operating Base Subic, Gen. Centino inspected three Filipino warships docked at the facility. He boarded the missile frigate BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151), which gained anti-submarine warfare capability through its organic AW-159 “Wildcat” anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter. Gen. Centino also examined the equipment aboard BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39) and BRP Ramon Alcaraz (PS-16).

The AFP chief’s visit aimed to gain firsthand knowledge of the ships’ capabilities and commend the competent and dedicated troops for their mission performance. The Navy’s continuous efforts to strengthen its naval assets and fulfill its national defense and maritime security responsibilities are crucial for the AFP’s overall effectiveness. 🚢
