The municipal government of Manila has banned all physical activities linked to the upcoming Sto. Nio Fiesta in Tondo and Pandacan, citing the growing coronavirus illness 1019 (Covid-19) infections in the National Capital Region (NCR).

During a news conference on Thursday, Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso said that the same prohibition enacted during the feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo will be imposed on the next Sto. Nio fiesta, which is the city’s second-largest religious feast.

Religious processions, street parties, stage shows, parades, palarong kalye or street sports, ati-atihan and the like, as well as other types of public gatherings, are prohibited on the feasts of Santo Nio de Tondo and Santo Nio de Pandacan, which are held every third Sunday of January.

He stated the decision to ban any physical activity and large gatherings during the festival is necessary as part of the city’s efforts to stop the Covid-19 from spreading.

All physical masses at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Sto. Nio de Tondo and the Sto. Nio Parish in Pandacan is likewise suspended, according to Domagoso.

He recommended Sto. Nino adherents simply attend the churches’ online services.

Meanwhile, Domagoso added that EO 04 will impose a liquor restriction during religious events in Tondo and Pandacan.
