In honour of the hero’s 158th birth anniversary on Tuesday, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has deployed cops in major districts of Metro Manila to ensure a calm and safe Bonifacio Day.

Maj. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr., NCRPO chief, said the five police districts deployed a large number of officers in their respective areas, which were supplemented by officers from the regional headquarters.

The Manila Police District, Quezon City Police District, Northern Police District, Southern Police District, and Eastern Police District are the five districts covered by the NCRPO (EPD).

“We are prepared for any eventuality,” Danao said in a statement. “However, even though we have planned for the worst-case situation, the expectation of a calm and safe celebration remains,” he said.

Andres Bonifacio Day is a national public holiday in the Philippines commemorating the birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, known as the “Father of the Philippine Revolution,” on November 30.

Because he was executed by fellow Filipinos, he is remembered on his birthday, Nov. 30, 1863, rather than his death date, May 10, 1897.

To ensure the Philippines’ independence from Spain, he founded the secret revolutionary movement “Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan,” more widely known as the “Katipunan.”

Bonifacio was a top Katipunan officer who rose to the position of “Supremo” (Supreme Leader) in 1895.
