Duterte is in favor of holding restricted in-person classes.

President Rodrigo R. Duterte said on Monday that the pilot restricted face-to-face (F2F) sessions held in 28 public schools in Metro Manila went well.

Duterte expressed his gratitude for the “gradual” return of students to their universities.

“I’m delighted they thought of it simply dahan-dahan lang, huwag masyadong mabilis kasi,” he remarked in a pre-recorded public address.

He also stated that after the pilot in-person programs are evaluated, other institutions will be allowed to restart.

“Don’t be discouraged if you haven’t been authorized to reopen yet, because these are all experimental and trial initiatives.” Doon muna titignan natin kasi nandoon lahat ng government resources and yung mga official nandoon at makita kaagad at (This is where they will assess because the government’s resources are there and officials can easily visit and check on them immediately and) they can keep up with what’s going on,” he added.

There are two participating schools from Caloocan, Las Pias, Mandaluyong, Manila, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Paraaque, Pasig, Quezon City, Taguig, and Valenzuela in the conduct of F2F classes, and one participating school from Makati, Malabon, Pasay, and San Juan.

Duterte permitted restricted face-to-face sessions in 120 public and private schools in areas deemed low-risk for Covid-19 in September.

Due to worries about more infectious Covid-19 strains, Duterte repeatedly rejected plans from the Department of Education (DepEd) for experimental F2F classes.

He did say, though, that in some places with poor Covid-19 transmission, he could consider allowing limited in-person lessons.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has been given authority to grant safety seals to schools that pass the agency’s assessment of restricted face-to-face lessons.

Following a successful pilot program in October, the country began a statewide rollout of pediatric vaccination last month.

Only Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been licensed for use in children so far.
