TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – In the last two months, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has distributed 206,582 family food packs (FFPs) to Typhoon Odette victims in Eastern Visayas.

Typhoon victims in the provinces of Southern Leyte, Leyte, and Eastern Samar have benefited from the PHP120.77 million in food assistance, according to DSWD Eastern Visayas regional director Grace Subong in a phone interview Tuesday.

“We’ve been generating more food packets since local government units continue to ask for more aid.” “We’ve done the second and third wave of distribution in some locations,” Subong said in a phone interview.

Six kilos of rice, four cans of corned beef, four cans of tuna flakes, two cans of sardines, five sachets of coffee, and five sachets of cereal drink are included in each FFP, which is enough for a family of five to eat for two to three days.

On February 11, the DSWD central office dispatched 5,000 food packets to supplement ongoing relief efforts in typhoon-affected areas.

For the towns of Dulag, Hilongos, Hindang, Matalom, Tacloban City, Bato, Inopacan, Javier, Abuyog, and Mahaplag in Leyte, the DSWD released FFPs.

The towns of Anahawan, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, St. Bernard, San Juan, Silago, Liloan, Pintuyan, San Francisco, San Ricardo, Bontoc, Libagon, Limasawa, Maasin City, Macrohon, Malitbog, Padre Burgos, Sogod, and Tomas Oppus are among the grantees in Southern Leyte.

In the province of Eastern Samar, the agency also provided food bags to Mercedes town.

According to Subong, the DSWD will only send help to places that need it the most because the typhoon-affected areas are still in the early stages of rehabilitation.

To expedite the distribution of post-typhoon help, the DSWD has been working with other members of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

“Odette” slammed into the Caraga and Eastern Visayas regions on December 16, with sustained winds of 195 kph in the center and gustiness of up to 270 kph.

It made two landfalls in Southern Leyte after hitting Surigao before wreaking havoc on Central Visayas.
