ROME (Reuters) – The “horrendous cruelties” in Ukraine’s war-torn country was slammed by Pope Francis on Wednesday.

“Even against people, mothers, and vulnerable children, more heinous atrocities are being perpetrated.” “They are victims whose innocent blood calls out to heaven and implores,” Francis stated at the Vatican during his weekly audience.

“May this war come to an end!” May all weapons be silenced. He went on to say, “Stop sowing death and ruin.”

Francis displayed a Ukrainian flag during the audience, which he said he received from Bucha on Tuesday. “It comes from conflict, from the slaughtered city of Bucha,” he remarked.

The Vatican has volunteered to mediate in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and Pope Francis indicated over the weekend that he was considering accepting a Ukrainian request to visit Kyiv, “but I’m not sure if it can be done.”

The world community has slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow after Ukraine accused Russian soldiers of perpetrating “genocide” and “war crimes” in Bucha, a town near Kyiv’s capital.

The charges have been dismissed by Russia as a “fake news attack,” with the country claiming that the photos of dead bodies and films of slaughtered people that have sparked international anger were created after Russian soldiers departed from the city.
