MANILA – Chairman Popoy de Vera of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recently led a High-Level Higher Education Partnership Mission to Canada to expand opportunities for academic and research partnerships in areas such as health sciences, renewable energy, agriculture, engineering and technology, data science, and disaster risk management, among others.

“CHED’s expedition to Canada is a testament to Canada and the Philippines’ strong collaboration on higher education internationalization,” says de Vera.

The mission allowed CHED and delegates to visit and meet with nine post-secondary institutions in Ottawa and Toronto, including Carleton University, University of Ottawa, Algonquin College, Ryerson University, York University, University of Toronto, Niagara College, Seneca College, and Mohawk College, during the Philippines-Canada Education Networking at the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa on March 29, 2022.

“The success of CHED’s mission to Canada is built in a shared aim to enhance internationalization between Canadian and Philippine higher education institutions,” Canadian Ambassador Peter MacArthur remarked.

“As a result, we look forward to facilitating even more trans-Pacific brain circulation among students and professors,” he said.

“The significant growth of academic and research partnerships between Canadian and Philippine higher education institutions in recent years has fostered cross-border collaboration between countries, expanding access to international education opportunities for Canadian and Philippine students and faculty,” said de Vera.

De Vera was accompanied by Danilo B. Bose, OIC-Director of CHED Region I, Angel Cachuela, Trade Commissioner for Education of the Canadian Embassy in the Philippines, and officials from eight (8) Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs), including Mariano Marcos State University, Iloilo Science and Technology University, West Visayas State University, Southern Leyte State University, World Citi Colleges Aeronautical, and Technological College, Tarlac Agricultural University, and World

He signed Joint Statements on Higher Education Cooperation with Universities Canada and Colleges and Institutes Canada to increase education collaboration in areas like student mobility, indigenous peoples education, research aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, faculty and staff development, Microcredentials, applied research, and curriculum inclusion of in-demand skills.

On top of the 11 memorandums of understanding (MOU) created between Canadian and Philippine universities in various disciplines during the epidemic, Universities Canada and Colleges and Institutes Canada inked Letters of Intent with the eight Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs).

To begin collaboration at the post-secondary and post-graduate levels, CHED signed a Joint Statement on Higher Education Cooperation with Ryerson University on March 30, 2022, and an MOU on Academic Collaboration with York University on March 31, 2022.

De Vera virtually accompanied the Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines His Excellency Peter MacArthur on April 6 to witness the signing of an MOU on aircraft maintenance engineering and avionics between WCC Aeronautical and Technological College and British Columbia Institute of Technology.
