PEF is considering relocating PH eagles to a new sanctuary.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Fears about avian influenza (AI) or bird flu have prompted the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) to consider relocating its endangered eagles from their refuge to a more secure location.

“All it takes is one instance of this lethal virus in the Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) to wipe out the world’s only captive breeding stock of the species,” PEF Development Manager Andi Baldonado said during a press conference here Monday.

Baldonado reported an AI epidemic in the nearby town of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, which is close to the PEC facility in Malagos district, which occurred last month.

“It’s only 90 kilometers away from the PEC. It brings the threat straight to our doorstep, putting all 34 eagles in the PEC at risk of extinction,” she explained.

“This equates to a loss of 5% of the estimated global population of this already critically endangered species,” says the report “she continued.

Baldonado acknowledged, however, that relocating the eagles to a more secure and viable breeding area would be pricey.

“This proposal is expensive to accomplish and will require input from both the public and commercial sectors. We hope to gain support for our project during Philippine Eagle Week (PEW) “she stated

From June 4 to 13, the PEF will celebrate “#AgiLaya: Lasting Freedom for the Philippine Eagle” with SM Lanang Premier, Boysen Paints Philippines, and San Roque Power Corporation.

The event takes place on the 35th anniversary of the PEF.

An exhibit at SM Lanang Premier Atrium from June 5 to 12 exhibiting Philippine eagle conservation milestones is one of the event’s highlights.

The exhibit, which includes a taxidermy specimen of the late Pag-asa and forest patrol gear, tries to show how far eagle conservation has progressed.
