MSMEs need ICT interventions due to the pandemic, according to DTI.
Some entrepreneurs from micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) have emerged as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), and they needed assistance with ICT skills.
Based on its two years of working with MSMEs in the area, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 10 (Northern Mindanao) made this observation.
At the height of Covid-19’s string of community quarantines and the significant number of cases, according to Julie Nieve, DTI-10 spokesman, the organization moved to digital venues to continue providing its services.
“We educated MSMEs on the value of having a website for their companies. While some of us may be accustomed to using social media, we must acknowledge that some MSME businesses have not yet mastered internet tools like Facebook, according to Nieve.
According to her, this is accurate for certain rural farmer-entrepreneurs with microscale company structures.
The owner of MC Coffee, Melvin Fabello, claimed that the pandemic prompted their businesses to take a “hiatus,” which led them to concentrate on online marketing.
Fabello and his staff attended a number of training sessions on developing packaging and enhancing the coffee they made with the assistance of DTI.
“DTI gave us the technical know-how on how to package (our products) correctly now that the market is open again,” he said.
Fabello added that their friends’ “word of mouth” helped spread awareness of pure arabica coffee.
Meanwhile, Nieve said that in 2021, there were 24,239 new business registrations in Northern Mindanao, despite the epidemic.
This is only 637 fewer than the total number of new and renewed business registrations of 24,876 that were made in 2020.
She explained in the local dialect that despite the restrictions, “we have nonetheless received many business name registrations since many of our entrepreneurs saw an opportunity where they could offer their goods and services online.”
