To reduce sugar prices, a group applauds the PBBM ruling against hoarders.

The Samahang Industriya at Agrikultura (SINAG) applauded President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to continue the government’s use of visitorial powers in sugar warehouses and to hold discussions with shops to cut market prices countrywide on Wednesday.

SINAG President Rosendo So stated at the Laging Handa public briefing that the industry sincerely appreciated Marcos’ action in the wake of the sugar importation debacle.

“The President did a great thing by talking to grocery owners about lowering their pricing. Naturally, we anticipate that the price will be even lower next month given that we have observed our local millers selling for only PHP45 while the import price was PHP43 plus a 5-percent levy. Therefore, we anticipate it to be less than PHP70,” he said.

It should be remembered that the President stated unequivocally that local producers will receive priority. We also concurred that the shortage was made up.

“Anong kulang lang ‘yun ang ipasok, tingnan mabuti ‘yung local kung maraming stocks, i-prioritize ang local manufacturers,” said the speaker. Nakita naman natin na may kulang kaya umangkat at nag-announce ang SRA (Sugar Regulatory Administration) na may talagang shortage, and nag-panic lang siguro lahat

The President inquired as to whether we have an adequate local supply. If we do, we should give preference to regional producers. The only time we should import is if there is still a scarcity. As we can see, there is actually plenty. Only until the Sugar Regulatory Administration announced an importation owing to a scarcity did everyone get alarmed, he continued.

“Candy pricing”

Trixie Cruz-Angeles, the press secretary, acknowledged the effect of ongoing problems with the supply of sugar for small-scale groceries.

Upon the President’s request, supermarkets and grocery stores voluntarily reduced the price of sugar from a high of PHP90 to PHP110 per kilogram to PHP70 per kg, according to reports that reached Malacanang.

Small-time food store operators, meanwhile, are finding it challenging to keep their costs low.

Cruz-Angeles claimed that Marcos’ request to maintain sugar pricing at PHP70 per kg is only temporary and that it will be withdrawn once supply difficulties are resolved.

“The price reductions at the various malalaking supermarkets are voluntary, and they are only available for a short time, pero, dahil. Since the choice by retailers to lower the price of sugar is a voluntary one, this offer is only valid while supplies last at SM. For instance, SM pledged to carry out this task while supplies last),” she stated.

“After that time, I started to wonder what the market’s dictated pricing were. In the event that panandalian, we might not be required to react since we will return to tracking market prices when the term finishes. We might not need to reply if it is only temporary because they will be able to sell sugar after the time period is through.

She gave the assurance that the government would give them the support they want for small groceries that were seriously impacted by problems with the sugar supply.

“Magre-responde ang ating gobyerno kung ma-extend ito at masyadong severe yung magiging consequence sa kanila. Asahan niyo po (If this time frame is prolonged or if they are in immediate need, the government will act. You may anticipate that),” she continued.

She also reassured the public that there are still open investigations into potential hoarding.

“Let’s wait for the investigation’s findings. Others have assumed that what they are doing is appropriate and acceptable. We are also looking into whether or not things were hoarded if they are not being trafficked. Both the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) are undertaking their investigations, she said.

She continued by saying that these processes assist the DA-SRA in obtaining reliable inputs on the current state of the market and determining whether more importation is required.

The DA stated earlier this week that market sugar prices may continue to improve and decline to PHP60/kilo. Additionally, it stated that the nation’s sugar supply will be enough through December.
