DTI steps up enforcement against uncertified goods.

After the Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau’s (FTEB) inspection activities in September, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reinforced its enforcement mission to eradicate uncertified products nationwide.

In Cebu, 81,649 pieces of uncertified tires for automobiles, G.I. steel pipes, deformed steel bars, and low carbon steel wires totaling PHP14.78 million were seized by the DTI’s enforcement teams on Tuesday, according to a report.

Last month, Davao del Norte also carried out a crackdown on 1,765 uncertified light-emitting diode (LED) lamps, plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) electrical tapes, plugs, socket-outlets, snap switches, BI/GI steel pipes, low carbon steel wires, pipes (uPVC) for potable water supply, uPVC rigid electrical conduit, ceramic plumbing fixtures (sanitary wares), lead-acid storage batteries,

The DTI discovered 1,472 pieces of uncertified low carbon steel wire, automobile tires, and lead acid storage batteries worth PHP1.63 million in the Bulacan Malolos and Meycauayan.

A total of 23 businesses out of 37 that the FTEB inspected were found to violate the Philippine Standard Certification Mark Schemes and were given notices of infractions.

According to DTI Undersecretary for Consumer Protection Group Ruth Castelo, “The DTI and its provincial and regional offices are one in ensuring that only certified products are being sold in the market. Therefore, as part of our regular function, our enforcement teams regularly check products under the mandatory certification.”

Castelo stated that DTI’s market surveillance aims to ensure that only dependable and secure consumer goods are offered for sale.

The government cracked down on 113,825 items from January to August this year that did not adhere to the Mandatory Product Certification Schemes. The price of these goods was PHP34.35 million.

The Philippine Standard (PS) Quality and/or Safety Certification Mark Licensing Scheme and the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Certification Scheme are two examples of Mandatory Product Certification Schemes governed by the Bureau of Product Standards.

Consumers are encouraged to report businesses who sell essentials for more than their suggested retail prices (SRPs) by contacting the DTI’s Consumer Care Hotline at (1-384) or consumercare@dti.gov.ph, the DTI said.
