More agri-related problems were resolved during the Marcos administration: DA executive
With President Ferdinand R. Marcos in charge of the Department of Agriculture (DA), more issues in the agricultural sector may be resolved right away, a government official claimed on Sunday.
In spite of growing calls from certain lawmakers to name a full-time agriculture director, DA spokesman Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista supported Marcos’ choice to continue leading the agency.
According to Evangelista, having the President serve as the head of agriculture facilitated quicker cooperation between the DA and other governmental agencies, which ultimately resulted in more issues being resolved.
“I think it helps that our dear President is the head of the DA because the agriculture sector has many needs that will involve other agencies as well,” she said. “Ako po sa tingin ko nakakatulong po na ang mahal na Presidente ang siyang pinuno ng DA dahil po marami pong mga pangangailangan ang agriculture sector that will involve other agencies as well.”
She said, “If our agency is able to cooperate successfully with other government agencies, then we can solve more of the problems of our stakeholders.
Staying
Marcos announced on Thursday that he would continue in his position as DA Secretary because there are some issues that can only be resolved by the President, particularly with regard to departmental issues that have persisted for years.
“A President has several powers that a Secretary does not have. He said this at the 48th Philippine Business Conference and Exposition of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry at The Manila Hotel. “The issues are so complex that it will take a President to modify and turn it around.
He claimed that because the issues in the agricultural industry are so “deeply ingrained,” it would be some time before they are resolved.
“Sa ating magandang sistema dati, hindi ganun kabilis, hindi ganun kadali na ibalik. Kaya’t (Restoring it to the previous decent system is not something that can be done quickly or simply. Therefore, I believe that I am still required there,” he continued in a brief interview.
However, he stated that he would be open to finding a successor after “structure adjustments have been implemented” and “DA’s functions are adequately institutionalized.”
According to the findings of the Pahayag 2022 Quarterly Survey conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia from September 16 to 20, 63 percent of 1,500 adult Filipinos supported Marcos’ choice to assume the DA portfolio.
Modernization
Agricultural modernization, according to Senator Cynthia Villar, is the key to food security and would be a vital component of President Marcos’ programs for economic recovery.
She claimed that although the nation had all the necessary components for a successful food program, expansion is hampered by inadequate training and automated farming.
The proposed PHP163.8 billion budget of the DA for 2023, according to the chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture and Food, will be sufficient to achieve the goals of the administration, reduce reliance on imports, and modernize the sector through the purchase of equipment and training activities.
In a radio interview, Villar remarked, “They can use the grant to buy seedlings and contemporary agricultural equipment; the reason why we are not competitive in comparison to other countries is that we lack such).”
