Elon Musk and Henry Sy Jr. collaborate for PH satellite internet

Philippines’ MANILA – Through a ground-breaking partnership with American tech tycoon Elon Musk, billionaire Henry Sy Jr. is launching a countrywide satellite broadband service.

Sy and Anthony Almeda, the co-founders of Data Lake Inc., recently reached an agreement with Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), the business that owns the Starlink broadband satellite. Data Lake is now the first Starlink integrator in Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

Because the Philippines is an archipelago, Almeda explained, “connecting our nation to the rest of the world frequently demands substantial infrastructure.”

The late Taipan Henry Sy Sr. founded the conglomerate SM Investments, which is involved in market-leading real estate, retail, and banking sectors. Sy is his eldest son. He serves as the chairman of Synergy Grid & Development Philippines, which manages the Philippine National Grid Corporation.

With the largest constellation of satellites in orbit, Starlink is a versatile service that is uniquely suited to offer the Philippines high-bandwidth, dependable internet, even during natural disasters, he continued.

Game-changer
SpaceX will use Starlink to launch thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit, creating a constellation of spacecraft that can beam high-speed internet to remote regions of the world.

In the Philippines, monthly premiums for commercial coverage begin at $99 per month.

In difficult-to-reach, remote locations on land, at sea, and in the air, Starlink achieves game-changing connectivity, according to Jonathan Hofeller, vice president of Starlink sales at SpaceX.

“We’re grateful to individuals who have helped us link regular people, corporations, and government entities,” he continued. “We look forward to making the service available throughout the Philippines in the coming months.

In more than 40 nations, Starlink offers high-speed, low-latency broadband internet.

Low-orbit satellites, which were previously only used for military and scientific purposes, have attracted the interest of tech titans Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos of Amazon due to their capacity to deliver high-speed internet to places without fiber cables and cell towers.

For dependable communication, thousands of networked satellites are needed since they retain orbit closer to the planet’s surfaceโ€”more Starlink’s recent spacecraft will operate at an altitude below 570 kilometers. David Tanael, vice chair of Data Lake, praised the collaboration as well.

In the modern era, connectivity is essential, and Starlink will assist Data Lake to achieve its objective of equitable and sustainable economic development across the Philippines, he said.
