The local administration began a 20 percent tax break for its citizens on Monday.

The discount for municipal taxes, according to Mayor Rolando Uy, is required by Ordinance No. 14389-2022 and only applies to those who pay in full by January 1, 2023.

The reduction covers real estate taxes and additional taxes accumulating to the Special Education Fund that is payable the following year.

The rebate, however, “shall only be awarded to properties without any tax delinquent,” according to the regulation.

According to Uy, the proposed fiscal incentives and economic reforms package, which the City Council later approved as an ordinance, including the tax cut.

As the local administration stepped up the enforcement of local rules pertaining to public order, Uy apologized to street sellers who would be relocated to one of the city’s main streets.

He said, “Four and a half months have gone by, and some (vendors) did not help themselves (in adhering to the agreement), therefore I ask for an apology that I have to implement the law.

Vendors that ventured beyond the Cogon public market’s designated selling area were the ones Uy was referring to.

According to him, some sellers spread out to other streets, like JR Borja Extension, which led to high traffic during rush hour in the late afternoon and early evening.

Uy led a team of inspectors and observers during the weekend in the marketplace, where he spoke with a few of the traders.
